RE: Running from a hurricane with the 5er

I think getting out after an evacuation has been ordered would be impossible for our area. You must cross a bridge and/or go through a tunnel to leave the area. Add the people evacuating from the Outer Banks through our area and it will be gridlock. Fortunately, the Tidewater area seems to miss much of the hurricane action because we protrude out into the Atlantic. I would leave a couple of days before an anticipated evacuation depending on the storm size.

RE: Rubber Roof

We followed the cleaning directions for our Alpha roof. It is in such bad condition in less than 4 years that it must be replaced. Alpha only warrants the roof against leaks, not deterioration. They did say if water damage was found under the roofing material that they may offer compensation. Otherwise we are on our own.

RE: Rubber Roof

You probably do not have a Dicor roof. Our SunnyBrook has a Alpha roof. Hope you have better luck with your Alpha roof. Ours is not quite 4 years old but looks 12 years old and is in the process of being replaced. We just used Spic and Span and like products. No help from Alpha Roofing. Their 12 year warranty is not what it seems.

RE: Q: Civil Servants Using Military Base CGs

Navy does not issue a retired civilian ID card. Once you retire, you can no longer access military bases unless you are sponsored on. I have seen a retired civil servant at one of our local campgrounds. Not sure how she managed it; possible that she had one of the Army or Air Force ID cards.

RE: Would ya?

I also think you should look at rvdreams.com. Linda and Howard quit the corporate world in their 40's and have been rving fulltime for 3 years. There website has loads of information that would be helpful to you. They are up front about everything including money. Their web site has a big following and many prospective fulltimers call and visit them. Check it out.

RE: Blue ridge parkway?

Skyline Drive NP does have an entrance fee. It was $10 the last time I was up that way. If you are going early Oct, you may be too early for the fall leaves. We are usually on the Harley and it is a wonderful drive.

RE: Speed Traps - Forewarned is forearmed

I am a fan of red light cameras. You only get a ticket when you enter the interesection after the light turns red. We've had numerous fatalities from red light runners. We have a locale that is considered a "speed trap"-Emporia, VA. The speed limit is well marked - if you obey the speed limit, it will not an issue.

RE: How do you do getting warranty work completed?

Sometimes you can find an independent rv repair facility that will do warranty work for the manufacturer. When our RV was under warranty, the local SunnyBrook dealer was not interested in doing warranty work because we did not purchase from him. We worked with the manufacturer and he allowed the independent to do the work. We paid the repair facility and the manufacturer paid us.

RE: Tricare Terms Confusion - Military Retirees

Have you considered using TRICARE Standard and a supplement? We have researched this extensively and it looks like the best way for us to go. The supplement will cost approximately $100 per month. TRICARE Prime is just like an HMO and really only works well for routine medical matters when you are within your Prime area. An emergency is a different matter.

RE: Campground between Indy and Gettysburg

We have stayed at both the Madison KOA and the Washington KOA off I-70 in PA (near Pittsburg). Madison has the best sites for an overnight stop if you take one of the pull thru sites at the bottom of the hill with no sewer hookups. The rest of the sites are on hills and it is very difficult to get in or out without damaging your rig.

RE: bush gardens VA.

Newport News is rustic. It has lots of trees and blacktop pads. It does not have sewer hookups and the bathhouses are not the best. No pool either. I do like this campground very much though. It is really quiet and has a great 5+ mile walking/bike path. Chippokes State Park is across the James River from Williamsburg in Surrey County. The new section is very nice but again, no sewer hookups. The bathhouses and laundry are great there. There is a nice pool that you use free when camping. You take the James River Ferry across to Williamsburg (free). Do not know how late the ferries run though and if you had to drive around to get back to the state park, it would be a long drive. Virginia Beach has First Landing State Park right on the Cheaspeake and Holiday Travel Park is pretty nice. Does not matter where you stay, traffic will be a nightmare. Better over towards Chippokes State Park as it is a rural area. Bring your walking shoes to Busch Gardens. It will be hot, humid, and hilly-also lots of fun.

RE: How many of you still carry a small lumberyard?

We have 4 sets of the Lynx levelers and love them. No breakage and their orange chocks are designed to work with them even when you have to stack them up to level. We put then under both our front and rear jacks too. In winter, we put them under the tires for long term storage. We would have to bring a lumber yard with us to accomplish the same thing.

RE: Full Time in a TH?

We will move into our TH sometime next month and take it on the road in Feb 09. The reason we purchased our SunnyBrook TH was because the garage area is completely separate and the living space was very nice. We wanted it to look like a home, not a garage. Our TH is 40' though. To get that separate living splace, the TH has to be long.

RE: No equipment

I cannot imagine why you would want to come to Virginia Beach. It is very touristy and way over priced. First Landing State Park is ok. It is the most expensive in the Virginia State Park system. We drove through a couple of weeks ago and saw people with a variety of equipment. Using your van will not be a problem. They provide "Site Occupied" signs so you will not have to worry when you are away in your vehicle.

RE: how to keep dining table from sliding open?

We wedge a folded piece of paper in the extension to keep it from moving when traveling. It is easy to store and does not require anything permanent on the table. And when it wears out, just get a new piece of paper.l it is cheap and it works great. Have been using the same folded piece of paper for 4 years now.

RE: Where to Stop???????????

We stop at truck stops and use the truck pumps. We are just too long to get into regular pumps most of the time. When fueling at the truck pumps, fuel and then move your rig forward so the next person in line can use the pumps. Then go in and pay or pick up your receipt. The truckers are not unhappy with you fueling there if you follow that procedure.

RE: Stupidest thing you’ve done while RVing

We were on a motorcycle camping trip. While we were visiting relatives, we were going to take in a Cubs game. Rode all the way to Charlottesville, VA (150 miles) and realized we had forgotten the tickets (sold out game). Turned around, rode back to Va Beach and picked up the tickets. Ended up riding 550 miles that day. Next day we rode 700 miles to get to our destination.

RE: Disappointed about my local dealer

had the same problem with our local SunnyBrook dealer in Virginia. We saved a ton of money buying out of state. Local dealer was not interested in warranty work because we did not buy it there. That is their call. So we found an independent repair facility in our local area that SunnyBrook allowed to do the work. We paid for it up front and SunnyBrook reimbursed us. I suspect we received a better repair because he had a different approach in repairing the problem than SunnyBrook had.

RE: Orlando to NYC

I think there is toll bridge on 301 going southbound. It was $12.00 for our truck and 5th wheel but only $2.00 for cars. The bridge was narrow and steep, but no problem.

RE: Smoothing out my ride .....

MorRyde Susupension with a MorRyde pin box. Really smoothed out the chucking on rough roads.
